What you Need to Know about National Finals Rodeo

In addition to the earnings for the cowboys participating, the PRCA approximates that the event injects approximately $90 million into the Las Vegas economy every year. Recent attendance figures highlight the enthusiasm of rodeo fans, with 177,565 attendees donning Wrangler jeans, Justin boots, and cowboy hats at events held at the Thomas & Mack Center. Another 40,000 fans watched the action from 40 hotels hosting watch parties. During this special time of the year, the marquees on the Las Vegas Strip often trade DJs’ faces for the faces of bull riders, exemplifying the city’s embrace of rodeo culture.

Main Events The NFR consists of seven main events, each with its own prize pool. Payouts are determined based on a competitor’s ranking within each event and their overall performance at the NFR. Competitors who rank in the top six in a specific event receive payouts, and those who rank in the top eight overall at the NFR also earn payouts. Here are the NFR’s main events:

  1. Bareback Riding:

In this event, a cowboy on horseback uses a bareback rigging as their primary means of staying on the horse. They must hold on for 8 seconds to achieve a qualified ride and are judged on their riding technique.
  2. Steer Wrestling:

Also known as “bulldogging,” this event features a horseback steer wrestler who brings a fast-moving steer to a stop as quickly as possible. It requires a combination of strength, technique, speed, and precision as the wrestler dismounts from their horse to wrestle the steer to the ground.
  3. Team Roping:

This event involves two horseback team members, headers and heelers. Headers aim to rope the steer’s head, while heelers aim to rope its hind legs. Timing and coordination are crucial, and both team members must perform their roles successfully to avoid penalties.
  4. Saddle Bronc Riding:

Similar to bareback riding, this event requires a horseback cowboy to maintain balance for 8 seconds while the horse bucks. However, in saddle bronc riding, the cowboy sits on a saddle and uses one hand to hold onto a thick rein attached to the horse’s halter.
  5. Tie-Down Roping:

Cowboys on horseback attempt to restrain a calf by throwing a well-timed rope loop. The cowboy and calf start from designated points, with the calf given a slight head start. The cowboy relies on the horse to reduce slack in the rope before dismounting and tying up the calf as quickly as possible.
  6. Barrel Racing:

A women’s event where cowgirls race against the clock to complete a strategically set course with three barrels in a triangular formation. The goal is to complete a cloverleaf-shaped run as quickly as possible, with penalties for knocking over barrels.
  7. Bull Riding:

The cowboy’s goal is to stay on top of a bucking bull for 8 seconds while maintaining balance. They are judged on technique and can earn extra points by spurring while the bull bucks. The cowboy holds onto a flat braided rope, which also wraps around the bull’s chest.

All-Around Champion

The All-Around Champion title is a prestigious honor that recognizes the versatility and talent of a cowboy. To earn this title, a cowboy must win the most prize money in a year, compete in at least two NFR events, and earn at least $3,000 in each of those events. This award is considered the highest honor bestowed by the PRCA.

Super Bowl of Rodeo

The NFR has earned the moniker “Super Bowl of Rodeo” due to its immense popularity and financial impact within the rodeo world. The event’s scale and consistent sold-out status are so significant that the UNLV basketball team, which typically uses the NFR’s venue during its season, must plan its schedule to be away from the venue throughout the NFR festivities.

Cowboy Christmas

Cowboy Channel Cowboy Christmas 2023

For those seeking a respite from the non-stop adrenaline of the NFR’s main events, the Cowboy Christmas experience offers a delightful change of pace. This segment of the NFR festivities is all about cowboy shopping and serves as a bustling marketplace where hundreds of exhibitors from the United States and Canada showcase their wares to thousands of eager buyers. Excitingly, this year, the show will have a special preview and tree lighting ceremony on Wednesday, December 1, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., followed by regular hours from December 2 to 11, open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Junior World Finals presented by @YETI

The Junior World Finals, presented by @YETI, will bring together over 850 contestants who will compete within the Wrangler Rodeo Arena during the exciting 10-day event in December. Situated in the heart of Las Vegas, each contestant showcases their talents at the Las Vegas Convention Center. These young athletes will vie for a remarkable combined cash and prize payout exceeding $1 million as they strive to secure a coveted Montana Silversmiths championship buckle.

National Finals Rodeo Prize Money

The 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) is breaking records once again with a staggering payout of $14.1 million. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Las Vegas Events made the exciting announcement today, marking the second consecutive year of increased payouts for the world’s largest rodeo event, set to take place from December 1st to December 10th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

This year’s Wrangler NFR will feature a historic competition payout of over $10.9 million. This impressive sum includes a guaranteed prize fund of $1.2 million for all NFR qualifiers, as well as an additional $9,700,098 in competition prize money.

To put this growth into perspective, between 2015 and 2020, the NFR distributed a total of $10 million in prizes, consisting of $8.8 million in competition prize money and $1.2 million guaranteed for qualifiers. In 2021, the total purse increased slightly to $10,257,048.

With the updated purse for 2022, round winners will walk away with $28,914 per round, and those who excel in the averages will earn an impressive $74,150. Each go-round will offer a generous prize pool of $93,270, while the average total will provide a substantial payout of $279,811 per event.
